Bouroullec Self

How terrific looking is this shelf by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra? I came across it in my ongoing quest for a sideboard, but I suspect Husband will not approve. First, we're looking for a true sideboard, and not open shelving, so we can get our boxed wedding china off of the tops of our kitchen cabinets where it is currently residing. Second, and more importantly from a practical storage standpoint, this shelf would never get used as such, since I would eagerly swoop in with my minis, setting up a Pinky diorama even before the delivery men could leave.

It's true. I have dollhouses on the brain, just about continuously. The Self Shelf with its modular construction and flexible plexi panel arrangement reminds me of the Momoll Play Tower Thing.

The shelf also channels the (life size) Jericho House that I blogged about previously a bit, not to mention the Bozart Kaleidoscope House with the multicolored plexi walls. It's way too tall (who doesn't love 15-16 foot ceilings?) to be a true 1:12 scale house, but the one or two level shelf would nevertheless make a swank pad. The four level shelf could be a modern condo building!
I'm inspired. I've been thinking about constructing my own dollhouse recently, and the idea of a structure like this, in a smaller size, really appeals to me. I love that the interior walls can be moved to adjust for varying room sizes, and the various moods and looks that the different color scheme panels provide. (I particularly like the maroon, green and yellow combo in the last picture above.) And, it could be easily dissassembled for flat storage in our space-limited apartment. I just need to see my carpenter friend now . . .

Self shelf available at Hive Modern.
